I am Presidential Professor of Philosophy at University of Oklahoma. I received my BA from Hendrix College and my PhD from University of Hawai'i.
My research principally focuses on early Confucian ethics and most especially on the Analects. My most recent work aims to use early Confucian work on li as a foundation for thinking through contemporary issues surrounding ordinary manners and civility. More broadly, I am most interested in ways that early Confucian ethics can enliven efforts to due philosophical justice to commonplace human experiences and struggles. My other work concerns, for example, mourning and grief, as well as everyday aspects of how we present ourselves socially to others.
